Day 2 at Austin City Limits Music Festival

By the second day of ACL I was in heaven. The weather would cool down in the middle of the day, I was feeling amazing after seeing my favorite band, and looking forward to seeing even more. I feel like I saw everyone on Saturday but I was only able to catch a small portion of it. I saw Bobby Jealousy, Max Frost, Reignwolf, HAIM, Lissie, Grimes, Passion Pit, Kendrick Lamar, and The Cure.

Bobby Jealousy was a Austin local band but they really rocked out the morning. Max Frost was more of a funk/alternative type band, also from Austin. I was pretty happy that I got to see some local bands.

Lissie was really really good! I have heard her music before but had no idea how amazing she was live. She gets compared as a singer/song writer like a 90s female song writer, but I think she has a lot more diversity than just doing girl-folk music. She did an amazing cover of a hip hop song to finish her set.

HAIM was really good, though I would have prefered seeing them in a smaller venue. Grimes was really boring, which was surprising.

The Cure was legendary. I am not the biggest Cure fan, but seeing The Cure felt like seeing a legend, though not quite Stevie Wonder legendary.

Austin City Limits Music Festival 2013 Day 1

Austin City Limits Music Festival 2013 was the best festival I have ever been too. It is my 4th time going to ACLFest, 3rd time doing a 3 day weekend. The amazing band list was overwhelming, and I didn’t get to see everyone I wanted to see, but I still saw some amazing music.

Day 1 was “Muse” day when I got out of bed in the morning. Muse has been my favorite band for years, and they have been my favorite ACLFest show since I last saw Muse in 2010. That quickly changed when I saw Latasha Lee & The Blackties as my first band. I always forget how amazing all of the music at the festival is, and looking forward to a show at the end of the day isn’t the way to go. Latasha Lee was amazing. After Latasha Lee I saw Widowspeak, and they were pretty cool. They sounded like a indie-er version of Mazzy Star.

I ended up seeing Fun. , which wasn’t the plan, but I kept hearing that they put on a good show, and they were amazing.

After Fun. , I went through a huge mass of sweaty people and traveled to the other side of Zilker to see Arctic Monkeys and Muse. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Arctic Monkeys, and I really wanted their show to make me fall in love with their music. Their sound was a lot different than what I was expecting, but people had said they had matured over the past couple albums. I am not totally “in love” after their show, but I am wanting to listen to their music more.

The Muse show was awesome, though a little disappointing. They blew the power out on their stage a couple points, forcing them to cut a bunch of music out of their setlist. They played the songs I really wanted to hear from their new album “2nd Law,” specifically ‘Follow Me, Liquid State,’ and ‘Madness.’ I wanted to hear ‘Animals’ as well, but didn’t get to hear it. Oh well! It was a good Muse show anyway!

Muse eventually finished off with Knights….classic Muse.

I had a great time and an amazing first day! I spent a lot of time sitting in the back center of every stage, hanging out on top of my blanket and drinking a lot of great beer. After the first day, I’m not feeling that sore or tired. Just energized and looking forward to the rest of the weekend.

Austin City Limits Festival 2013

If you haven’t seen the Austin City Limits lineup, you should really check it out.

Austin City Limits Festival is one of the bestest events in the world. I look forward to it every year. At the end of the festival, I go through a blue period where I miss seeing badass music everyday, then I move on and count down the days for next years.

The lineup this year is incredible. Depeche Mode, Muse, The Cure, Atoms for Peace…. the list goes on. The biggest fear is now the actual schedule. Who is going to play when, and more importantly, where.

If you have never been to a festival before, you should totally go. Of the different music festivals I have been to, ACL is the most laidback festival I have ever been to. Everyone that works for the festival is super nice and helpful.  They give away free water. The food options are all of Austin’s local favorite places (I recommend getting a burrito).

So here is a list of “must haves” if you are thinking about going but have no idea what to bring:

  • Backpack
  • A pair of good running shoes (or shoes you can walk in) and also a pair of flip flops.
  • A extra pair of socks.
  • Towel(s)
  • 3 Water bottles that are water tight. I recommend filling them up with water the night before, and then throw them in a freezer.
  • Sunblock.
  • Hat.
  • Aspirin and allergy medicine. Austin is a allergy hell mouth.

The Impossible Has Happened – Damon and Noel play together

Holy Wowness!! Check this Article out:

In the mid 1990s I was a HUGE Brit-pop/Brit-Music fan. I loved everything from Kula Shaker, Mansun, The Verve, Primal Scream, SuperGrass, Pulp….I could keep going.

Oasis and Blur were my gateway into the genre of music. I remember sitting in the car with my Grandmother on the way to a swim meet hearing Oasis’s “Live Forever,” and it became an anthem for that whole year.

Then I heard Blur’s ‘The Great Escape‘ and my mind was blown. I still go back to the album every now and then and listen to the whole thing. Then Oasis released ‘What’s The Story (Morning Glory)’ and I basically had a Oasis/Blur addiction until I learned more about the UK music that was happening at the time.

(Oh and Damon Albarn was my high school crush).

During this time, Blur and Oasis were in some sort of media feud. Since they were the biggest bands, the media felt the need to pit them against each other. I’m sure members of the band said stuff about each other in the press, but I’m not 100% on that.

Still, it blows my mind to see Noel and Damon playing together. That is too cool.

Can the new Queens of the Stone Age album come out already?

I have been a huge fan of the Queens of the Stone Age albums for a long time, but the news that has been rolling out about who is working on the new album has been blowing me away. I just read this article on nme.com announcing that Elton John is gonna be on the new album. OMG!

I never imagined a album would bring together Elton John, Trent Reznor, Dave Ghrohl, and Jake Shears! This album is going to be sick!

Where does my background come from?

I am getting asked this over email a lot, so I will post it here. The background image I am currently using for my theme (which is below, in case I change it later) came from a picture I took of a concert. It was the Crystal Castles show at Austin City Limits 2012. It was a fantastic show. I highly recommend checking out Crystal Castles if you like crazy electronic music.

A couple people put some YouTube videos of the show here.
